On one of my visits to my chiropractor, he suggested I pick up the book The Well Adjusted Dog by Dr. Daniel Kamen. The book is compiled by a chiropractor who also does adjustments on animals, although he doesn't advertise this. Evidently, chiropractors aren't permitted to exercise on animals in many states, which I didn't understand, because I live in Canada and this doesn't seem to be a problem within my province. Nevertheless, what's good to know is that veterinarians within the U.S. are permitted to do modifications on animals... that is if you're able to find one that's studied medicine. Not an simple task.

In any event, Dr. Kamen wrote this book (amongst others) to ensure a dog owner could learn to do their own adjustments on the dogs. The book is very educational and walks you through the physiology of the dog's backbone, shows you how to feel for misalignments and offers a selection of methods that you may do in the home. Most of the practices focus on how exactly to launch anxious muscles, particularly when you are uncomfortable with really working on spinal column.

While studying the book, I ran across an extremely interesting portion which discusses dog collars and how they are able to easily cause neck dilemmas for a dog. Most of it comes right down to our (ie human's) improper handling of lead get a handle on on certain collars. Here's what Dr. Kamen has to say about dog collars:

'The improper use of collars is the number one cause of cervical (neck) subluxations in dogs. Of the places to put unnecessary stress, the cervical area, particularly the upper two cervical vertebrae, could be the most harmful. It is at this time that the body matches the brain.' (Dr. Daniel Kamen, The Well Adjusted Dog, g. 24)

** What Types of Collars Are Available **

I thought I was succeeding with a dog harness. Ha! I quickly realized this might actually function as the reason behind my dog's disc difficulties positioned where her neck meets her shoulders. I was even more surprised at what he explained was the collar to make use of.

Basically, you'll find that there are five major forms of collars being used by most dog owners: the frequent flat nylon and leather collars, the choke collar, the prong , the leader or head collars, and the harness..

** Flat Collars **

The standard level collars are what most dog homeowners often choose, however they can be the most dangerous type. These collars are utilized for hanging your dog's tags and for merely attaching the leash to the steel loop. This collar form should not be properly used for dog training... If you have difficulty managing your dog while out walking or should they be utilized.

** Leader Head Collars **

These look like an ideal solution to teach your dog. A frontrunner collar fits on the head of one's dog, much like a muzzle does. The leash links to a metal trap situated on the collar under the dog?s chin. The concept behind it's to turn the dog?s visit?lead?? them where you would like to go. Sometimes humans might turn the head too forcefully or too hard in frustration when attempting to educate their dog. That, just like the normal collar, can cause upper neck problems.

** Choke Collars **

This is the form of collar usually utilized by dog trainers. The idea behind it is when a dog pulls also much, it starts to choke and release the pressure of the collar and thus can ease back. In reality, the intuition of a dog when it seems the tightening of a series will be to distance themself from it, effectively tightening the collar even more. Your dog could literally choke itself in to a coma! Improperly trained dogs and more importantly, improperly trained owners, may cause extreme damage utilizing a choke collar.

** Harness **

A harness was created to fit over a dog's shoulders and be attached round the chest area. While a much better choice over a regular collar or even a choke collar, these harnesses could cause subluxations in the lower throat, neck, torso, and foreleg region. Again, the primary cause to this is frequently related to annoyed entrepreneurs taking back on the leash, which causes the harness to put a large amount of stress on the shoulder and chest areas.

** Prong Collar **

This collar looks like some medieval torture device. Manufactured from steel, the prong collar includes a round ring of spikes on its internal surface. Directs pressure equally around the neck region properly restraining the dog when training the smallest quantity of opposition. As Dr. Kamen states in his book: 'Some coaches liken the prong collar to 'power steering' where even the slightest touch will produce the desired result.' He's found that dog's that make use of this particular collar have far less upper cervical subluxations than with every other collar type. So essentially, this is actually the collar to utilize when training and walking your dog, believe it or not.

** What Else May Cause Cervical Subluxations in Pets? **

There are many other issues that also can cause difficulties with cervical subluxations. The requirements of how dog's are trained (taught to lay on the left and look up in the operator causes neck stress) is one area of concern. Mismatching dog size to dog obesity, dog owner size, poor bedding, harmful play procedures, leash length, and just how certain dogs are bred, are some of the other factors behind canine neck issues.

Of course, you'd be hard-pressed to check every move your dog makes. Perhaps he enjoys sleeping on the hardwood floor near the fire rather than the cozy dog mat you bought. Perhaps you caused your dog to leap too substantial, causing neck pain and played a little too hard today using the Frisbee. The main thing would be to attempt to correct possible activities which could cause neck subluxations in your furry friend so they do not continue steadily to do more harm. You may also desire to grab the book - The Well-adjusted Dog - and learn how you could search for possible misalignments in your dog's neck and spine, then learn how to do a few of the corrections yourself. By doing so, you'll be providing your dog a much happier and less unpleasant life.
